THEODORE, AL – An update to the Mack Manufacturing website introduces new content and navigation features intended to help buyers of crane grapples and buckets to match equipment choices to their applications more easily.

“All the original content at mackmfg.com is still there,” says Matt Davidson, Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “However, we simplified the overall navigation and expanded the links on our home page to guide visitors to the right sections for their industry.”

With a wide range of new pages focused on individual users of heavy-duty crane attachments such as log handling, steel processing and ports facilities, the revised website introduces visitors to the full range of grabs and buckets offered specifically for their application. Links provided on these pages lead the visitor to detailed specifications for the chosen attachment type and model.

Davidson notes that the website’s new content also includes added insight into the manufacturer’s engineering and manufacturing processes. “People do know our products and they know our quality,” he says. “Now they can learn a bit more about how we achieve such a high standard on every unit we produce. We have a unique corporate structure that reflects the values our founder set in 1942. It’s a “quality first” culture that you can’t just create overnight.”

The revised website also puts a particular spotlight on Mack’s active remanufacture and repair services. “In these times, every industry needs to extract the maximum value from every piece of equipment. Our attachment remanufacturing operation lets customers restore as-new performance to their operation without the new equipment price,” says Davidson.

THEODORE, AL – While most industry sectors for material handling equipment have been in lean times through the recent economic downturn, Mack Manufacturing has been building its business on waste!

As Mack’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Matt Davidson, explains, “The waste industry has been one of our most active sectors recently. As we’ve seen, garbage has to keep moving no matter what the economy is doing.”

Mack 5 tine electro-hydraulic grapples have quickly become the #1 choice in the waste-to-energy markets.

Davidson admits that, normally, the volume of municipal waste in the country tends to fluctuate in step with economic activity. However, increased interest in using domestic waste as a fuel for energy production has created new demands for specialized material handling equipment.

“Our new grapple orders in this area have been primarily for use in energy-from-waste plants,” Davidson says. “Our clients, many of them industry leaders have been developing great new technologies for producing safe, clean energy from household garbage. By changing the methods and technologies for processing waste material, the industry is also changing its requirements for grapples and buckets.”

Davidson notes that about 6% of America’s energy is currently produced from combustible renewable biomass and waste. As other fuels continue to rise in cost and as landfill space becomes more scarce, he sees plenty of room for expansion in energy-from-waste (EFW) projects.

The mainstay of Mack’s business in energy-from-waste production is its line of 5-tine electro-hydraulic grapples. While Mack publishes extensive catalogs of grapple and bucket specifications for most crane applications, Davidson says that the firm has not developed a standard spec for its energy-from-waste products. “There are still relatively few of these plants operating in America,” he continues, “and every plant is a little different. We have a lot of product history to draw on, but it’s our practice to custom-design every grapple to suit the specifics of each EFW application.”

Davidson feels his firm is well positioned to support the needs of energy-from-waste producers. The Mack facility in Theodore, AL, maintains a highly experienced in-house engineering department, which works closely with customer service and support staff to ensure its designs are responsive to the individual needs of customers.

Typical installations require self-contained electro-hydraulic waste grapples in the range of 3 to 10.5 yard capacity. While most Mack grapples utilize familiar hydraulic controls operated through a solenoid valve, models are also available with the reversing motors preferred in some processes based on European technologies. Typical installations require self-contained electro-hydraulic waste grapples in the range of 3 to 10.5 yard capacity. Mack also offers traditional 4‑line grapples featuring the lighter weight steel and narrower tines recommended for all its waste-handling attachments.

Incinerator grabs are the most demanding waste application for Mack engineers. Mack offers a full line of self-contained hydraulic grapple and cable-operated grapples for feeding energy-from-waste incinerators. These units, however, feature heavier construction, heat-resistant materials and Viton hydraulic seals to endure the harsh incinerator environment.

THEODORE, AL – “The owners here have done everything themselves that we’re doing in the shop and in the field,” says Matt Davidson, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Mack Manufacturing. “So when one of us brings them an idea, they know what we’re talking about!”

According to Davidson, the Mack tradition of bringing up family and staff through the full gamut of operations in the company is an important part of the firm’s strategy for continuous improvement of its crane attachment products. And Davidson has seen the results first hand.

The robustness of the Mack scrap grapple is engineered into each one.

“Before I came into sales, I was a service tech,” he explains. “We had a diesel-powered grapple delivered overseas that I had to do some work on. Once over there, I quickly found that engine mounting was making things difficult for me in the field. As soon as I got back to the shop I let them know. Pretty soon, they had developed a new mount that lets the engine slide right out for servicing. Now it’s a sweet deal!”

From the sales perspective, Davidson has seen those ideas turn into practical and profitable benefits for Mack customers. “For a steel mill, downtime is always the problem to beat. Any problem that might result in an unexpected failure or costly service time has to be rooted out. Our problem-solving starts with excellent communications throughout the company.”

Nevin McElderry says that the “open door” policy that lets Mack technicians, engineers and shop staff work together as peers has always been part of Mack’s way of doing business. McElderry is General Manager of the manufacturing company. As the grandson of the firm’s founder, he is also one of the owners of the family business.

McElderry explains that he and his brothers were introduced to the business the same way his father was, learning its methods and operations from the ground level. “It helps us see problems from the technician’s and the operator’s viewpoint,” he continues. “Our open doors create a free flow of ideas through the company, from all our employees and our customers.”

Hydraulic grapples such as the ones Mack builds are not the most expensive piece of equipment in a steel mill, but they are a critical link in the process that keeps mills productive. Mack manufactures a comprehensive range of self-contained hydraulic grabs for use on the mills’ electrical overhead cranes. With models of all sizes based on both electrically powered and diesel powered hydraulics, including radio controlled units, the Mack design team is always encountering new challenges to meet customer applications, and new opportunities to improve the customer’s productivity.

Mack also manufactures smaller grapples for use on mobile equipment in scrap handling applications. “Whatever the application, ‘quality first’ is our priority, ‘’ Davidson says. “Our equipment is designed for a long service life, so efficient servicing is very important to us. We take pride in standing behind our warranty on any attachment. We put it together so we can take it apart; we build it so we can service it.”

While Mack has been building on hands-on experience since 1942, its open door approach reflects the most modern practices of today’s automotive plants. Where engineers once occupied “ivory tower” offices far removed from the factory floor, facilities now locate their product and process designers closer to the action, where they can see and respond to problems quickly. As Davidson points out, the culture of open-door communication doesn’t emerge overnight. “Openness flows from the top,” he concludes. “And its impact is on the bottom line.”

THEODORE, AL – Mack Manufacturing has been building on its range of single-line clamshell buckets to offer larger equipment for the higher capacity cranes appearing on some of today’s newer ships.

“We have been receiving orders recently for ship mounted cranes rated up to as much as 30 and 35 tons,” says Matt Davidson, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Mack. “25-yard buckets used to be the largest size we ever produced for these applications, but we’ll build them as big as our customers need.”

Mack buckets equipped with remote control can be operated within a 500 ft. radius.

Mack is a leading manufacturer of crane attachments for a full range of stevedoring applications. While smaller “touch & go” buckets were previously more common in use with the ship’s cranes, Mack has found that most ship builders and stevedoring firms have adopted their radio controlled, single-line buckets over recent years. One innovation that is gaining in popularity is Mack’s self-contained diesel-powered grapples and buckets with remote controls. This model allows our customers to handle materials with higher densities such as pig iron and HBI. “Our single-line buckets can be designed to meet the larger sized requirements than the old touch & go models,” says Davidson, “but they still offer the simplicity and versatility you want on a ship’s crane, compared to the electrically powered units used by port facilities.”

Mack offers a full range of medium-duty buckets recommended for off-loading bulk materials up to 100 lbs./cu.ft., as well as light-duty buckets that offer weight-savings and lower costs for moving grains and similar materials weighing under 60 lbs./cu.ft. Mack radio-controlled models allow operators to actuate the bucket hydraulics from onboard the ship or from the dock, anywhere within a 500 ft. radius. The solenoid control valve on the bucket is powered by a basic 12 V marine battery. Standard models include a second valve which can be attached to a ¼” line as a backup to the radio control.

With more than 30 years experience supplying equipment for ships and ports, Mack works with their customers to help them assess the optimum bucket size and type to match the equipment and cargoes they require. “Our goal is to move the maximum amount of material over the longest possible lifecycle,” says Davidson. “That’s how our customers get the best value from our products.”
